Holiday time often means that we are pondering some of the ‘best’ of the best ideas in gift giving. None of us as grandparents are foreign to this idea- right? After all, it’s what makes us ‘GRAND’ parents.
That being said, and on a very serious note here- we’ve got a great idea for you. Why not give this gift of love to the parents of your most precious grandchild: consider swimming lessons. Water safety for children is something that is as important if not more important than learning anything else as a toddler and baby. For babies and toddlers to master this skill, take a look around at centers that are running certified programs or even private instructors using indoor pools during the winter, or outdoor programs when the weather is warm.
According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control, hundreds of children aged 1 to 4 die from drowning each year. Drowning can and does occur in areas such as bathtubs, jacuzzis, hot tubs, and the list goes on and on; it just doesn’t happen at a ‘pool’. The most important thing a parent can do is get a child equipped to deal with water- it’s everywhere in their lives.
Kids as little as 6 months are equipped to start lessons. And, remember that swimming lessons are only part of the solution, because making sure that pools are properly fenced in and equipped with alarms and locks are a top priority. Being vigilant whenever you are around open water with children is crucial. It only takes one second when your back is turned for a tragedy to strike. There are so many gifts to offer your grandchildren; water safety lasts a lifetime.
