Summer is here which often means many changes in your skin texture, appearance and needs. It can break out more often, have more oil from the excess heat and require more care. These changes are attributed to the Fire Element in Traditional Chinese Medicine.

It’s also great fun to make your own masks. Here are three of our favorites:
DIY Probiotic Mask (or vegan scrub) for hyper-pigmentation
1 tblsp baking soda 1 tblsp lemon juice
1 tlbsp peppermint tea
1-2 tblsp organic yogurt or kefir (if vegan just substitute water, it will still be very effective)
Mix all ingredients and gently apply in a circular motion for 5 minutes. You may leave it on for 5-20 minutes. This recipe is based off an amazing Middle Eastern recipe passed on from a friend’s grandmother.
-Baking Soda acts as a micro-dermabrasion agent (exfoliant).
-Yogurt & Kefir are full of lactic acid and alpha hydroxy acids, which soften the skin and help with sun damage.
-Lemon Juice is rich in vitamin C, a precursor to collagen production, and reduces hyper-pigmentation.
DIY Blackhead Remover
During summertime our pores often get clogged with sunscreen, smog and sweat. Here are a few options for keeping summer skin clear and your pores clean:
-Raw honey mask – leave on for 15 minutes and rinse with warm water – repeat 3-5 times a week -Mix a few teaspoons of baking soda with water and apply paste to T zone – leave on for 10 minutes – repeat 3-5 times a week -Place a few drops of lemon essential oil on a cotton ball and apply to areas of congestion – repeat daily -And last but not least – steams are a great solution!
DIY Sun Damage Eraser
Sun spots, melasma or hyper-pigmentation…these are all different names for the same condition: dark spots on the skin. These pesky spots are extremely difficult to fade and they take time, care and diligence (think six months, and cleaning up your diet). You can work so hard and then one sunny day without sunscreen, they are back!
At night only:
Place a few drops of lemon essential oil on a cotton ball and apply to areas of concern – repeat nightly. Make sure to test your skin to make sure it is not too strong for you.
1 strawberry pureed
1 tsp champagne
1 tsp raw honey
1 tsp white kaolin clay
3 drops lemon essential oil
