There comes a point in our lives when we look back and think about all the things and decisions we have made in the past. Some will make us smile. Some will make us cry. Some will fill us with regret. We hope that your life will not be about regrets. Here are some pieces of advice to the younger women, from some of the strongest, wisest, and most independent elderly ladies that we know.*

  1. Be courageous!

There will be moments in your life when you will be too terrified to try, but overcome that and do it anyway. You will thank yourself later. If you’re successful at the first try, well done. If not, accept the lesson, try harder, and do better. If you spend your days being afraid, you will never discover just how amazing you are.

  1. Be grateful every single day.

Just slow down and live in the moment. Focus on all that you have, and not on what you’re lacking. Appreciate the little things and let people know how much you do. Don’t ever forget to say thank you for all the blessings and the lessons that you receive each day. When you have a grateful heart, everything is a gift.

  1. Never stop learning.

Learning does not stop when you graduate from university. Learning is not limited to the four walls of the classroom. Surround yourself with people who can teach you big and positive things that will help improve yourself as a person. Learn a new skill, try a new hobby, speak a different language. Never stop challenging yourself.

  1. Treasure your family.

It’s very easy to grow apart from your family when you start to prioritize your social life, studies, or career. Don’t forget the people who have supported you since the day you were born. They are the people who have been with you through thick and thin, so don’t be a stranger. Make sure you have a strong and healthy relationship with your family no matter where you are in your life.

  1. Keep a small and close circle of friends.

Having over a thousand Facebook friends or Instagram followers does not mean they will be there for you when the going gets tough. They won’t be there to hold your hair while you throw up inside the bathroom because you drank too much. They won’t be there to drive over to your house at 2 in the morning because of a family emergency. They won’t be there to know you’re not okay just by the way you hang your head. Know who your real friends are, and then love them with all your heart.

  1. Take a lot of photographs, and print them.

Not just selfies, or your outfits of the day, or the food that you’re about to eat at swanky restaurants. Take a lot of photographs of people you love, during special occasions and during ordinary days. Stolen and not. Print them out, frame them, or put them inside albums. When you’re older, you will be grateful to have all these memories preserved forever.

  1. Travel.

Save enough money, and travel to different places as often as you can. They don’t even have to be a different country, as long as it’s a place that you have never been. Do it while you’re still young and able. You will learn so many things about the world with each trip that you take.

  1. Read a lot of books written by strong women.

Read and learn. Be inspired by the thoughts and words of other strong and intelligent women. Take what you can with you and try to live by these principles and ideas. Be enriched and empowered.

  1. Don’t let heartbreak stop you from loving in the best way.

You will fall in love, and you will get your heart broken. But don’t let that turn you away from love forever. Love freely and completely, and you will find that at the right moment and with the right person, love is truly the best thing there is.

  1. Don’t take life too seriously.

Don’t let the stress of making a living rob you of the chance to truly live. Achieve a work/life balance. Spend more time with your family and your close friends. Laugh more often. Do the things that really set your soul on fire. Live simply, quietly, and richly.
