Grandparents - Are We Pushovers? well yes, of course!

The other day I made each of my grandchildren one giant and I mean GIANT heart shaped pancake larger than the plates could even hold! It was an epic breakfast time.
You know it was the kind of pancake that required a bottle of syrup, a full can of whipped cream, sprinkles and all the fixin’s that just make grandmas breakfast ever so special!
I served those precious children with such glory and turned to the get extra napkins- just anticipating the mess, when I overheard my granddaughter say to her brother: “I bet grandma can’t make a bigger pancake than this.”
And I immediately thought to myself how truly brilliant they are- knowing how to play me, because as grandparents there isn’t anything we wouldn’t do- right?
Then in a flash, I walked over to the stove and made 6 more pancakes- each one grew larger and larger than the one before!
As I placed the mound of pancakes in front of these adoring grandkids, I felt a strong surge of warmth come over my heart as moments such as these are forever etched in our grandparenting experience. And, hopefully memories such as these will resonate with the grandkids as they grow as well.
GRANDparenting…. You just can’t beat it!

Let’s not spend too much time here on the past; we all know it’s been a challenge. Now we are perhaps in a better frame of mind and wanting to stretch ourselves for some much needed time-out. How many times have you wanted to take some time for yourself, but thought it wasn’t possible? And how many times have you complained how exhausted you are, without doing anything about it?

We are never too old to make mistakes, and consistently learn from them. What happens when we get too overzealous and interfere with perhaps the marriage of our children or our ideologies of parenting? Should we be so intent on having our ideas or experience shared- or should we wait to be invited to the conversation?

A quick chuckle to share:

A quick chuckle to share:

On a recent weekend when the grandkids stayed over — our 4-year-old grandson came screaming out of the bathroom to tell me that he had dropped his toothbrush in the toilet. All the while this happened on ‘grandpa’s’ watch, as I went to do the dinner dishes!  I came right out of the kitchen and walked over to our grandson to calm him down, and I bravely fished out the toothbrush and threw it into the garbage.  I looked in his eyes, and told him, grandma has another brand-new toothbrush just for him, and he should not worry anymore.

Do You Step Outside Your Box?

Do You Step Outside Your Box?

Let’s face it- as we age, our brains function as a task automaton- meaning that we keep ourselves in the comfort zone of what we know best. We tend to find security and well-being in the routines we set forth, and manage accordingly. In doing so, we are truly fulfilled when we experience what we sense is most comfortable or predictable. It’s not that we become boring as we age- rather experience gives us boundaries and parameters in which to operate our daily lives and relationships. There’s nothing wrong with operating in your own comfort zone; it is truly the path of least resistance.
