The winter doldrums leave most of us longing not only for the warmer weather of springtime, but also for a chance to renew our spirit and refresh our image. After all, symbols of rebirth are bountiful this time of year; from sunbathed flower beds alive with fresh buds to bright pops of color in every storefront window. With these signs of life blossoming before our eyes, it’s no wonder the changing seasons stir our longings for renewal of mind, body, and spirit. Luckily, springtime is the perfect time to treat yourself to some much-needed TLC. You truly deserve it. After all, you’re a grandparent, and that means you are no stranger to offering unconditional love and care to others. Now it’s time to lavish a little attention on yourself in celebration of spring.
Here are eleven tips to help you commemorate the renewal of springtime—not only in your closet, but in your heart and mind as well.
Tidy up your closet. When your closet is messy, it makes choosing your outfits each day a chore rather than a joy. So, when you’re doing your regular spring cleaning, be sure to set aside some time to tidy and organize your closet as well. First, remove your heavy winter coats, scarves, hats, and boots to pack away in deep storage until next year. Then, remove every item and place them on your bed. Your closet should now be empty, so take this opportunity to vacuum or sweep, and dust all surfaces within. Once your closet is sparkling clean, begin hanging up your clothing once again. Set aside any items that need to be dry cleaned, tailored, or repaired. Finally, add in any warm weather items that you’ll be wearing this spring like skirts, dresses, tees, or capris, and spring flats and sandals. Voila, you’re now set up for the season!
Step into a pair of flats. When the weather warms up, it’s a great time to free your feet from a long season of nothing but thick socks and boots. A pair of flats is the perfect shoe for springtime weather, when it’s neither hot nor cold outside. So either pull out your favorite ballet flats or loafers—or treat your feet to a brand new pair. Remember, a bright pair of flats is a great way to add a pop of color to a neutral outfit, while a metallic or animal print flat reads as a great neutral.
Pick up a new spring top. Celebrate the arrival of spring by treating yourself to a new blouse, tee, or other top in a spring-like pattern or color. Trending this season are pastels, ‘60s inspired florals, and light-as-air sheer fabrics, so consider giving one of these styles a try today.
Top your look with a scarf. A lightweight scarf can add a touch of fun, whimsy, or even elegance to your spring outfits (not to mention, they give you an extra layer of warmth in mercurial weather). A metallic gold scarf or animal print in a silk chiffon will give you a lot of mileage since they will go with everything. If you’re looking for more color, then go with a solid option.
Update your style. If you’d like to update your look just in time for spring, a personal stylist or image consultant can be a big help! Image consultants and personal stylists can help you streamline your closet to save time and energy getting dressed, and can help you choose the best styles and colors to take the mystery out of shopping for great looks.
Spoil yourself with a spa day. A day at the spa is the perfect way to relax and rejuvenate your spirit. Schedule a few appointments like a massage, facial, manicure or pedicure, or a haircut to make you feel like a new person. And to really celebrate the colors of spring, choose a floral-inspired nail polish in petal pink, lavender, or violet.
Get hydrated. An important part of looking and feeling great is staying hydrated. Drinking enough water energizes you, helps your body operate better, and keeps your skin looking young—especially after a long, harsh winter. Sip on water, herbal tea, or other liquids throughout the day to ensure you’re getting plenty of fluids. And don’t forget to bring a water bottle with you anytime you leave home.
Bring the outdoors indoors! Cheer up the inside of your home with a few new indoor plants to clean the air and add an extra pop of color to any room. You can either pick up a few plants from your local nursery or start your own indoor herb garden to add color and flavor to your meals.
Take more time for yourself. If you’re like most people you have plenty of demands on your time and energy. But you can’t be your best self with others if you’re not taking enough time for you. Each week, be sure to reserve enough time to unwind and recharge. Maybe you need half an hour in the mornings to enjoy your coffee and a magazine, or some time for an afternoon walk each day.
Release negativity and cynicism. Over time, negative emotions take a toll on your wellbeing. Despite your best efforts, negative thoughts and feelings inevitably arise from time to time. But what matters is whether you dwell on them or release them and move on with your life. This spring, choose to focus on optimism and positive thoughts, feelings, and emotions and release any stale, outworn feelings of anger, resentment, or cynicism. You’d be amazed by the day-to-day difference this change will make in your life.
Get some fresh air. After months of winter, it’s a welcome change to head outdoors, soak up the sunshine, and enjoy the beautiful blooming flowers all around you. Be sure to get outside for a walk a few times a week, or at least step out on your porch or balcony to breathe deeply, relax, and enjoy the gift of being alive.
Springtime renewal reminds us that we have plenty of opportunities to turn over a new leaf, update our image, and commit to becoming happier and healthier than ever before. This spring, ask yourself how you will celebrate this eternal gift of renewal, and then set out to help it blossom in your life.
